When to seek help for my child |
|
The decision to seek help for children ultimately lies with their parents, but is often influenced by teachers, family, friends, social services, and the legal system. Parents traditionally seek counseling for their children either for relief of symptoms or behavioral change. Many behaviors are age appropriate, however, you should consult your pediatrician if your child is:
- * hard to control
- * aggressive
- * impulsive
- * lying
- * falling behind with school work
- * having difficulty focusing
- * crying excessively
- * not sleeping soundly
- * having problems getting along with, or fitting in with other peers
- * or, is behaving in ways that you believe are not quite right
-
As an additional specialist, a qualified counselor can help you determine what behaviors are age- appropriate, create a plan for behavior modification, and reduce problematic symptoms through direct treatment with your child. Age-appropriate behaviors are normal, however ongoing problems could be a sign that these behaviors require additional assistance. A good rule of thumb is the earlier the intervention the likelier the success rate for effective change.
